Arsenal have fewer than four days to finalise any potential deal for Julian Alvarez if the club want the forward to be eligible for their upcoming Premier League fixture.
The north London outfit have been heavily linked with a summer move for Alvarez, but the timeframe for completing such a transfer is extremely tight should manager Mikel Arteta require the player for the upcoming match against Aston Villa.
The club still have approximately eight days remaining in the current transfer window, though the window for signing players who need to be registered for the next league game is considerably shorter.
Arsenal have already welcomed five new signings to the Emirates Stadium this summer. Piero Hincapie’s temporary spell at the club was converted into a permanent transfer, while Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa have all arrived.
The north Londoners have spent approximately £200million strengthening their squad and further expenditure cannot be ruled out before the window closes. Sources indicate Alvarez remains a primary transfer objective for the club, and should both the player and Atletico Madrid become more amenable to a sale, with the forward having been roundly jeered by home fans upon his return to the club, Arsenal could still pursue the signing.
However, the actual cutoff date could be earlier than the traditional Tuesday September 1 deadline if Arteta wishes for the Argentine international to be available for selection immediately. According to the Premier League 2026/27 Handbook, the Gunners must complete registration less than four days from now.
The handbook states that the deadline for the Board to receive all properly completed registration documents is noon on the final working day preceding the first league match in which the club intends to field the player.
However, international transfer certificates and proof of eligibility to work in the United Kingdom may be submitted after this point, though they must be provided before the player becomes eligible to participate in any league match for the club.
With Arsenal scheduled to travel to Villa Park on Monday, August 31, the club must ensure Alvarez is registered by noon on Friday, August 28. At present, there is no indication that any agreement between the two clubs is imminent.
The complexity of the proposed transfer, including the financial magnitude involved and the potential ripple effects on both clubs as well as other players, makes negotiations particularly challenging. There has been no suggestion thus far that Alvarez himself would be more receptive to joining Arsenal, with sources suggesting the player continues to prefer a potential switch to Barcelona.
