Ezri Konsa has joined Arsenal as the club’s fifth summer acquisition, following earlier moves for Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis and Bruno Guimaraes.
The north London club have secured the 28-year-old centre-back from Aston Villa in a deal worth an initial £51m, rising to £55m with additional payments. Konsa has committed to a four-year deal at the Emirates Stadium, with the option to extend for a further year.
According to football.london, Konsa pressed for the transfer after taking an extended holiday following England’s run to the World Cup final. Sporting director Andrea Berta was equally eager to finalise the agreement, considering the England international a priority defensive addition.
Speaking through club channels, Berta stated his satisfaction at completing the signing, describing Konsa as a high-calibre defender whose pace, composure and tactical awareness have made him one of the Premier League’s most reliable performers.
He noted that Konsa’s ability to play both in the heart of defence and at right-back would provide the squad with valuable flexibility while upholding the defensive standards crucial to their trophy ambitions.
Berta highlighted that the new arrival brings established top-flight and international pedigree alongside strong leadership qualities, positioning him to integrate smoothly into the team’s approach.
He emphasised that beyond his technical abilities, Konsa possesses the character and mindset to make an immediate impression at the club, welcoming both him and his family to Arsenal.
It is believed Arsenal initially offered £30m earlier in the summer, which Villa turned down outright. The club returned with a £40m proposal the following week, but Aston Villa held firm on their £60m asking price.
With Konsa still having four years left on his Villa contract, he made his intentions clear to move to north London. Berta eventually sanctioned the £51m plus add-ons agreement, making Konsa Arsenal’s fifth summer capture and pushing the club’s total expenditure to approximately £200m.
After putting pen to paper, Konsa expressed his ambition to help Mikel Arteta’s side secure more honours. He described the move as an exciting opportunity and a privilege, stating his determination to continue winning.
The England international reflected that joining one of the world’s leading clubs represented a proud personal and family milestone, acknowledging the wave of emotions before expecting full appreciation to arrive on debut day.
When asked whether Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze had offered insights about life at Arsenal following their time together with England at the World Cup, Konsa revealed they had spoken positively about the experience and expressed eagerness to train and compete alongside them.
The defender was seen video-calling several first-team players during Arsenal’s open-top bus celebration at the end of last season. Asked whether he hoped to replicate that occasion, Konsa confirmed his intention, stating he would give everything to maintain the club’s success.
On what appeals most about working under Arteta, Konsa cited the defensive aspect, noting the manager’s appreciation for defenders who excel in their primary duties and remain composed in possession, suggesting the tactical approach aligns well with his own strengths.
