Arsenal CEO Garlick defends transfer strategy after five summer signings

Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick has outlined the club’s approach to the transfer market as the summer window concluded.

The north London side finished the window having brought in five new faces while allowing seven senior players to depart.

Among those arriving at Emirates Stadium were Christos Tzolis, Illan Meslier, Piero Hincapie, Ezri Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes.

Hincapie’s loan arrangement was converted into a permanent deal following his previous spell at the club.

Mikel Arteta oversaw departures including goalkeeper Karl Hein, defenders Jakub Kiwior and Ezri Konsa among others, with Christian Norgaard, Leandro Trossard, Reiss Nelson, Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Jesus all leaving permanently.

Ethan Nwaneri moved to Borussia Dortmund on a temporary basis.

Gabriel Martinelli’s potential exit to Al-Hilal remains unconfirmed as the window shut.

Attempts to strengthen the forward department proved fruitless.

Sporting director Andrea Berta had targeted Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior for a significant investment, only for the Brazilian to remain with the Spanish champions.

Julian Alvarez was considered as an alternative, with Arteta personally discussing a move, yet the Argentine international preferred a switch to Barcelona that Atletico Madrid prevented from progressing.

Offers were received for several players including Jean-Matteo Bahoya from Eintracht Frankfurt, though the club elected not to pursue those opportunities.

Speaking to the Men in Blazers YouTube channel, Garlick explained the methodology behind recruitment decisions.

He emphasised the importance of entering negotiations with clear objectives while maintaining club principles.

He suggested that successful negotiations typically result in all parties feeling somewhat dissatisfied, which he characterised as the optimal outcome.

The failure to secure a marquee forward has drawn criticism from sections of the fanbase anticipating a statement signing to support Premier League and Champions League ambitions.

While Garlick participates in transfer discussions, co-chair Josh Kroenke and sporting director Andrea Berta lead negotiations.

The club possesses resources for potential January activity should opportunities arise, though the mid-season market presents its own obstacles.

The Raheem Sterling loan from Chelsea demonstrated the kind of business Arsenal were willing to pursue when terms aligned.

The club now appears prepared to evaluate options in the winter window or wait until the next transfer period before attempting to bolster the squad further.
