Ezri Konsa has emerged as Arsenal’s primary defensive signing target throughout the summer transfer window, and the north London club now appears poised to secure the Aston Villa centre-back’s services.
The Gunners have arranged a medical examination for the England international after reaching terms with Villa, with the two clubs agreeing on a fee structure. Multiple reports confirm Arsenal will pay an initial £51million with additional clauses attached to the deal. The two sides had significantly different valuations at the outset, with Arsenal initially placing a £40million price tag on the player while Villa held out for nearer £60million, with the Midlands club ultimately prevailing though not quite at their opening asking price.
Negotiations at executive level between the clubs reportedly took place earlier in the day to reconcile the valuation discrepancy. With that matter settled, Konsa has bid farewell to his Villa teammates and coaching staff ahead of his Thursday medical at Arsenal.
Arsenal’s opening approach for the defender arrived at the beginning of the current transfer window but fell substantially short of Villa’s valuation and was swiftly rejected. Konsa featured regularly for England at the World Cup and has since been absent from Villa’s pre-season preparations, with fellow internationals Watkins and Martinez also granted extended leave, with all three absent for the UEFA Super Cup loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
The north London side’s attention appeared to shift towards defensive reinforcements following Vinicius Junior’s decision to remain at Real Madrid, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah and Barcelona’s Jules Kounde considered as potential alternatives to Konsa.
The 28-year-old has remained Arsenal’s leading centre-back target throughout the summer, with his ability to operate both centrally and at right-back proving a crucial factor in the pursuit. That flexibility addresses particular concerns given William Saliba’s persistent back problem and Jurrien Timber’s injury troubles dating back to March. While Mikel Arteta can call upon Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White, the squad lacked adequate cover in those areas heading into the new season. Konsa is anticipated to become Arteta’s fourth defensive acquisition across the past three summer transfer windows, joining the likes of Ecuador international Piero Hincapie, Christos Tzolis, and Illan Meslier in arriving permanently this summer.
